This month, I had the unforgettable experience of running my dream race: the New York City Marathon. With a record-breaking 55,646 finishers, it was the largest marathon ever held, bringing together competitors from 137 countries.
Some exciting news from Fire on the Hill today as we begin 2024.
We are expanding our operational footprint, with the opening of our newest location, in New York City. The milestone marks another step in our journey to shape a better world by supporting clients in the technology, energy, infrastructure and corporate sectors.
Two stories have caught my attention in the past few weeks.
The first is of a newsroom coming together to undertake the longest strike at a digital media company to date in order to improve working conditions. The 13-day labour struggle prompted managers at Insider to write their own stories and the editor-in-chief to tear down union fliers in his local neighbourhood.
Now that the dust has settled, the bleachers are folded away for another year and sore muscles have begun to heal, it seems a good time to look back on my experience running the London Marathon.

The first two decades of this century have seen some of the most dramatic changes in Western democracies that we have seen for half a century. A global pandemic, financial crises, escalating conflicts and wars, climate disasters, the rise of China, Brexit, the Arab Spring, the rise and fall (and possible rise again) of Trump and increasing social activism to name a few. All have reshaped how we live, do business, interact and communicate.
Today’s world is complex and challenging. The prospects of geopolitical conflict, climate change, cost of living crises, the disturbing impact of some aspects of big tech and a wider global economic downturn are all challenging governments, businesses and individuals alike.
