Fire on the Hill turns awareness into action as Mental Health Awareness Month closes

Since 1949, each May has marked Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States. Established by Mental Health America, a national non-profit dedicated to the promotion of mental health, well-being and prevention, the campaign seeks reduce the stigma around mental illness, while promoting resources, support, and understanding for those affected.

Each year, the organisation establishes a theme that reflects the state of the mental health conversation. In 2025, mental health awareness has long been on the rise, so it makes sense that this year’s theme is “Turn Awareness into Action.”

The theme was established with the goal of celebrating the progress we have made in recognising the importance of mental health – and challenging us to turn understanding into meaningful steps toward change.

As Mental Health Month comes to a close for 2025, we at Fire on the Hill have been acting on this year’s theme, thinking through the lessons we’ve learned amid rising mental health awareness in recent years with a goal of acting on it. In doing so, we’ve established a dedicated internal team focused on wellness, with an eye towards shaping Fire on the Hill’s employee policies and initiatives around the promotion of strong employee mental health.

The establishment of our new internal team reflects our belief that it’s always important for companies to keep employee mental health top of mind. Beyond it being the right thing to do on an individual level, recent studies have shown that nearly 81 per cent of workers face some form of burnout or mental health issue, and 68 per cent of employees say their daily work has been interrupted by these challenges.

One of the best ways to promote strong employee mental health and wellness is to ensure that those who need help aren’t afraid to ask for it. As our wellness team looks towards internal policies and initiatives, one of our goals is to promote that culture.

Much progress has been made when it comes to mental health awareness, and the conversation is turning. Widespread awareness has been achieved, and great progress has been made. Now, it’s time to act on it.

While the team is laying the groundwork now, we’ll be excited to share the work we’re doing over the coming months.
